Additional Pick-Up Order

Additional Pick-Up Order is used when an exceptional production is scheduled and not included in the loop. Example: an overtime production is planned on Saturday but the loop has been sized based on a Monday to Friday regular production and receiving schedule. This is the best way to not increase the loop for the whole week in order to cover Saturday production when you are receiving only 5 days a week.

An Additional Pick-Up Order is not faxed by the Counter. It is created by the VRO Champion upon request. Before faxing this PUO, the VRO Champion has:

  • to contacts the Supplier in order to agree about this additional Pick-Up, the time to fax it and to receive the Supplier promise;
  • to check if this additional material will be able to be loaded in the regular transportation (space or weight constraint);

Managing Additionals: the temporary loop increase

After been faxed, an Additional Pick-Up Order cannot be considered like a Regular Pick-Up Order for the next ordering cycles. Indeed, if you are including its quantities in the next orders calculation, they will reduce the future ordered quantities. This is not your expectation: they are ordered on the top of the regular quantities. Same potential problem after their receipt: if the related material is counted before the scheduled consumption, the next orders will be lowered.

Stephen Markidis defined an easy way to manage the Additional Pick-Up Orders called the Temporary Loop Increase.

Until the PUO scheduled consumption date is not over, Additional Ordered/Promised quantities increase the value of the loop as well as:

  • the in-transit quantity if the Additional Pick-Up Order is not received;
  • the inventory quantity if the Additional Pick-Up Order has been received.

An other way is to create a specific storage area to store material ordered with Additional Pick-Up Order. Then, you have to ignore during the ordering process:

  • Additional Pick-Up Orders in the In-Transit Cart until their scheduled consumption date;
  • material stored in this specific area.

It means that a consumption date has to be defined and displayed on an Additional Pick-Up Order in order to facilitate its management during the ordering process. When the consumption date is over, remaining material ordered with an Additional Pick-Up Order has to be considered as ordered with a regular Pick-Up Order.

Example:
Material ordered for weekend overtime and only partially consumed. On Monday:

  • With the Temporary Increase technique, you have to remove Additional Pick-Up Orders received from the In-Transit Cart and consider the not received ones (transportation delay for example) as regular PUO;
  • With the use of the specific storage area technique for material ordered with Additional, you have to move on Monday this material to the regular storage area.

An Additional Pick-Up Order is removed from the In-Transit Cart only after its scheduled consumption date.
